8th Grade
Monday, 5/5- Harvard and Yale completed a lab regarding collisions. Then, they were given a vocab. crossword to begin the reviewing process for the ch. 18 test.
Princeton created a study tool, a flip book of vocab words that will be on the test. They also competed the crossword.
The Chapter 18 test will be pushed back to Wednesday, May 14th. It was scheduled for this Friday, but due to NWEA testing I will not be seeng 8th grade this Friday. I also do not like to give tests on Mondays and would rather take another day to review, so the test is Wednesday. On Monday, May 19th, the students will begin working on a research project regarding Sir Isaac Newton and his Laws of Motion. More information on that will follow.
Homework for Harvard and Yale was to finish the lab and the crossword worksheet, both sides.
Homework for Princeton was to finish the flip book and crossword.

-Room 207 watched a 10 minute video on symbiotic relationships and took notes on Ch. 12 Sect. 3
HOMEWORK: Answer the questions below:
How are producers different from consumers?
--Why does each species have its own niche?
--How do organisms obtain energy for life?
--How do organisms interact?
--Name an example of each symbiotic relationship:
1. Mutualism 2. Commensalism 3. Parasitism
Room 209 and206 reviewed notes from last Thursday. Then they were given 36 pictures of animals and a laptop. They are to pair up the animals and determine which type of symbiotic relationship they have: mutualism, commensalism, or parasitism.
No Homework given.

WELCOME BACK! I hope everyone had a great break. It's hard to believe the end of the school year is in sight.
8th Grade
Today we started Ch. 18 Section 3 Collisions (p.533). As an introduction to momentum and the law of conservation of momentum, the students viewed a video that explained it and used automobiles as examples.
Below is the link to the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUpiV2I_IRI
They also took notes. There was NO homework assigned today, April 21st.
I have extended the deadline for the EXTRA CREDIT to Wednesday. I will not accept any extra credit after Wednesday.
On Wednesday, we plan on completing the acceleration lab. We are also going to do a lab on collisions immediately following the acceleration lab.
Since Section 3 is the last section in Chapter 18, a Chapter Test will be coming up soon. The tentative date for the test is Friday, May 2nd. This will allow us enough time to review. If anything changes, I will post it.
7th Grade
Room 209 will be beginning a research project on an endangered species. Homework: Find info. for research project.
Room 207 will review Ch. 12 Section1 & 2 to prepare for a quiz on Friday. If time permits, they will begin their research project on endangered species. Homework: Study for Quiz
Room 206 will be preparing for their "Mission to Mars" field trip which is on Thursday, May 8th. They will be video conferencing with Jet Propulsion experts. First, they will be assigned their group roles and prepare a "Golden Flash Drive" about the students at Hale. Homework: None

SPRING BREAK is only moments away!! Hopefully the weather cooperates so we can all enjoy the great outdoors!
Something to look for ...
In the overnight hours of April 14th -April 15th at approximately 1:00am, there will be a lunar eclipse and the moon will appear blood red. A lunar eclipse is safe to watch with the naked eye, unlike a solar eclipse. You can read more about it if you click on the National Geographic link below.

EIGHTH GRADE
Eighth Grade is working on calculating and graphing speed and acceleration. Upon our return from Spring Break, they will complete a lab that will test the question: How does the incline of a plane affect acceleration of an object?
The extra credit assignment involves word problems for calculating speed and velocity. Also for extra credit, students will need to solve a crime and act like a CSI agent. The task is another way to relate motion to the real world and make students aware of another career that utilizes math and science.
The only mandatory homework for 8th grade is to finish the worksheet that we did in class Friday. If they finished, then there isn't any mandatory homework.
SEVENTH GRADE
Well, Room 209 had a successful "Mission to Mars" just as Room 207 did last week. Room 206 will be going May 8th and will have a different mission. This time the students' mission was to either design a space suit, decide on which foods should be sent with the astronauts, or what methods and technology would they use to provide oxygen and water to the astronauts when they are on Mars. The students used apps on the iPads and they collaborated via Facetime with 6th grade students from Holy Trinity in Normal, IL. After, the students video conferenced with a thermal tech. engineer from NASA, Cynda Chullen, whose main job is developing a new spacesuit. Surprisingly, they have been using the same spacesuit for the last 40 years. If you Google her name, you will find much of the research she is doing. Thank you to Emily's mom, Ms. Quiroga, Vince's dad, Mr. Cordero, and Steven's dad, who also happens to be Zach's uncle, Mr. Aguirre for spending their day as our chaperones!
Below I wanted to share with you the emails I received from the senior coordinator from the Museum of Science and Industry regarding the students' behavior during the "mission."
This email was after room 207's trip:

Hi, Michelle! I wanted to thank you for having great students last week! I heard from my colleagues that at times the connection with the other group was a little tough, but thanks for being there! Julie said your students were wonderful, so all good things there!
Thank you,
Leslie

Michelle-
Your students were awesome! We were bragging about how great they were to our other coordinators that teach programs here at MSI. We really had a great time, and I hope your students did too!
Thanks again,
Leslie

It is always nice to hear compliments!
There isn't any mandatory science homework over break, however; the students can complete an extra credit assignment if they chose to. The extra credit assignment is analyzing a deer population based on given data and describing symbiotic relationships.

Tonight Mars is expected to be visible and shine a bright orange. This will not happen again until 2016.
